i’ve been a bit distracted the last couple of weeks, not helped by contracting first a stomach bug and then a sinus infection. i’m blaming qantas. i always get sick after the long haul flight home. getting back into work and normal life has been difficult. but i’m coming around. enough so that i felt compelled to buy some yarn online. because you know, i didnt bring enough back from the US with me or anything!
in all fairness, the one yarn i really want to buy when im in the US is madeline tosh. its probably my favourite yarn at the moment. actually it has been for a while. then i think about how much i love spud and chloe, and bluesky alpaca silk, and wollmeise, and koigu, and oh…well you know what i mean. but i like to buy madtosh in the states because firstly, its hard to get here quickly and it always costs way more, and secondly, the colours online are never quite right. but i didnt buy any this time. they stock a lot of it in purl soho but it was summer, so most of the colours seemed to be bright cheery ones, lots of orange and yellow. i dont do orange and yellow. actually, i dont really do cheery.
so i was very happy recently when a certain canberra yarn store finally got her long awaited order of the stuff. i even managed to snaffle a discount voucher, and i was restrained enough to only buy two skeins in the sock. they arrived a mere day after they were ordered (such great service), and i totally love the colours - the grey is ‘silver fox’ and the purpley one is ‘logwood’
i thought these were different type colours for me, but when i put them next to my three other skeins of madtosh sock, i discover, no, not so much!
from left to right they are Ink, Composition Book Grey, Silver Fox, Thunderstorm and Logwood. i obviously have a thing happening with these kinds of colours, and it becomes even more of a thing when i remember that im knitting some lace in thunderstorm, and a cardigan in ink!
so i’m not going to cast on either of the blues right now. im torn between the greys though. and im torn about patterns. this is my other madtosh sock project
wasabi peas in ‘tart’ (my favourite colour of theirs). i hate these socks. hate them with a passion. i hate the pattern, it doesnt work as its written, i hate the purl 5 togethers, it doesnt work in this yarn, and they dont even fit properly. i dont actually have cankles! so i’m going to rip these. i think. i dont know. its a lot to rip and it wont undo nicely, but i dont really see any option because i will never finish the second one and thats yarn wasted.
so my dilemma is do i rip now and start something else in the Tart straight away, or do i rip and store the yarn and start some new socks in either of the silver/greys?
and if i did start other socks, what would they be? nancy bushs? cookie As? or something else entirely? thoughts?
such a dilemma to have. Le Sigh.
k xx

If you can’t face frogging the red socks, send them to me and I’ll frog them for you and send you back a nice little neat ball
Ha ha, I’ll frog them for you and keep the yarn! Tee hee!
FROG NOW! If I can do it, you can do it!
And start a nice Nancy in the Tart. Can’t go wrong with a tarty Nancy!
Oh look at all that lovely Madeline Tosh. Its one of my favourites too. What a dilemma you face… I would frog the Tart socks and reknit that yarn first: that red is divine, plus I am lazy and its already been wound! No suggestions re patterns but I tend to prefer Cookie over Nancy (Eek I can hear all the sock knitters gasping in horror!). Good luck with you difficult decisions x
The remedy for the socks is easy. Don’t waste madtosh tart on socks you don’t like. Frog and knit Nancy.
But how to choose among all those beautiful greys? (because even the blues are really grey). Now there’s a real problem.
I say liberate the yarn and frog them. It is Bastille day after all! Life is too too short to knit annoying patterns. But that’s just imho. If you really can’t face holding onto all those lovely greys, I’m sure I can help you out with say the comp book or silver fox
I went through the same thing with the bayerische socks. I love the shibui red yarn but the pattern is fussy and hard and I don’t love the socks. I have one finished and one about a third done and I’m going to rip them out. I like the yarn too much to waste. But I do feel your pain. All that work down the drain.
I just bought some of the tart today and three others as well. Frog your, you’ll not be happy with it hanging around to haunt you.
